Setting Up Adobe Reader for Tablet PCs

When I bought my Tablet PC, one of the main things I wanted to do with it was read PDF articles. It quickly became apparent however that although there were loads of programs out there designed for reading eBooks on the desktop — none of them really allowed for finger-based browsing on the Tablet’s touchscreen. Those that did, also stripped the PDF of all the diagrams and tables that were vitally important to me.

After searching for what seemed like ages, I eventually decided to give up and head back to Adobe Reader. Sure it has a Full Screen mode, but it’s not exactly finger friendly. One tap will move you forward a page — to move back you need to right click or press the page up key — not that easy when your keyboard is hiding beneath the screen. On smoother screens, you might be fine with enabling pen gestures and then using your finger to navigate that way, mine however has a pretty rough texture that’s not up to that and doesn’t always register your swipes. Fortunately, after hunting through the preferences panel I discovered that you can actually enable some big chunky on-screen navigation buttons. It’s simple stuff really, and here’s a quick run through on how to do it.

First, head to the preferences panel. Click the ‘Edit’ option from the menu bar and pick ‘preferences’

Next you’ll want to select ‘Full Screen’ from the category list. It’s the second option. Then tick the ‘Show navigation bar’ option. This will enable the navigation buttons on the bottom left hand side of the screen. You’ll also need to change the option by ‘Mouse cursor:’ to ‘Always Visible’ to stop them from disappearing every five seconds.

Then click OK and you should be good to go! Just pick ‘Full Screen Mode’ from the ‘View’ menu on the menu bar or press Ctrl+L to head back into Full Screen Mode.
